UG stands for undergraduate, and it is the first degree most students choose after 12th standard. But with hundreds of undergraduate courses on offer, picking one can feel confusing. Should you take B.Sc or BCA? B.Com or BBA? Regular college or an online UG course?
This article answers those questions in simple words. You will find the UG full form, a clear list of undergraduate courses after 12th for Science, Commerce and Arts students, and an honest look at online UG courses for people who want to study while working or preparing for exams. We also cover eligibility, CUET, fees, duration and what comes after your UG degree, so you can make a confident choice.
What Is the Full Form of UG?
The full form of UG is Undergraduate.
“Under” means below, and “graduate” means someone who has finished a degree. So an undergraduate is a student still working towards their first college degree, the bachelor’s degree. Once you complete it, you become a graduate.
You will see “UG” in many places after Class 12th:
- Admission forms: “UG programs” means bachelor’s courses like B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA, BCA and B.Tech.
- Entrance exams: CUET UG and NEET UG are the exams for UG admission.
- Job ads: “UG: Any Graduate” means the job needs a bachelor’s degree in any subject.
UG full form and related terms
| Short form | Full form | Meaning |
| UG | Undergraduate | Bachelor’s degree level, after Class 12th |
| PG | Postgraduate | Master’s degree level, after UG |
| UGC | University Grants Commission | The body that regulates universities in India |
Don’t confuse UG with UGC. UG is a level of study, while UGC is the regulator that decides which UG degrees are valid.
What Is a UG Degree?
A UG degree is a bachelor’s degree, the first college degree you can earn after passing Class 12th. It teaches you the basics of one main subject, such as commerce, science, arts, management or computers, and prepares you for a job or for a master’s degree.
Common UG degrees include B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA, BCA and B.Tech. Once you complete one, you can write it after your name, for example “Riya Sharma, B.Com.”
How long is a UG degree?
Most UG degrees take 3 or 4 years. Under the UGC (Minimum Standards of Instruction for the Grant of Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate Degree) Regulations, 2025, which follow the National Education Policy 2020, you get a qualification at every stage, even if you leave early:
| If you leave after | You get |
| 1 year | UG Certificate |
| 2 years | UG Diploma |
| 3 years | Bachelor’s degree |
| 4 years | Bachelor’s degree with Honours or Honours with Research |
Can you take a break and come back?
Yes. Your credits are saved in the Academic Bank of Credits, so you can usually rejoin later and continue from where you stopped.
Professional UG degrees follow their own councils’ rules. B.Tech takes 4 years, B.Arch 5 years, and MBBS 5.5 years including internship.
Which UG Courses Can You Do After 12th?
Your 12th standard stream decides most of your options, but not all of them. Many courses, such as BBA, BCA, B.A., law and design, are open to students from any stream. Here is a simple list of undergraduate courses after 12th, grouped by stream.

Can You Do a UG Course Online While Working or Preparing for Exams?
Online UG courses let you earn a full bachelor’s degree from home, using live classes, recorded lectures, e-books and online exams. They suit three kinds of students:
- Working students who joined a job after 12th and want a degree without quitting
- Exam aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, banking or state exams who need a degree alongside their preparation
- Students with other commitments, such as family business, sports, or living far from a good college

The big question is whether an online degree is valid. The answer is yes, if the university is approved by UGC’s Distance Education Bureau for that course and year. UGC has said that UG and PG degrees earned through online or distance mode from recognised institutions are treated as equivalent to regular degrees, under Regulation 22 of its Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes Regulations (UGC Regulations).
Before paying, check two things on the official UGC-DEB website: that the university is approved for online programs in the current academic year, and that your exact course is on its approved list. Students joining online or distance programs are also required to generate a DEB ID on that portal.
Types of Online Undergraduate Courses (Online BBA, B.Com, BA, BCA)
Most online undergraduate courses fall into four main programs. Each one usually takes 3 years, split into 6 semesters, with exams conducted online or at test centres.
Online BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)
Online BBA teaches how businesses run: marketing, finance, human resources, operations and basic management.
- Best for: Students who want to start a business, join a family business, or move into sales, marketing or management roles
- What you study: Principles of management, business communication, accounting basics, marketing, HR, business law, entrepreneurship
- Common specialisations: Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Digital Marketing, Business Analytics
- Leads to: Executive and trainee roles, then an MBA for faster growth
Online B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce)
Online B.Com is the most popular choice for Commerce students who want a job or are preparing for CA, CS or CMA.
- Best for: Students interested in accounts, banking, taxation and finance
- What you study: Financial accounting, cost accounting, business law, income tax, GST, economics, auditing
- Common specialisations: Accounting and Finance, Banking, Taxation, International Finance
- Leads to: Accountant, tax assistant, bank and finance roles, then M.Com or MBA
Many CA and CS students pick an online B.Com because it fits around their coaching schedule.

Online BA (Bachelor of Arts)
Online BA is a flexible degree with the widest choice of subjects.
- Best for: Civil services and government-exam aspirants, future teachers, writers and anyone who enjoys social sciences or languages
- What you study: You usually pick a major such as English, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Hindi or Public Administration
- Leads to: Government exams, teaching (after a B.Ed.), content and media jobs, then MA or MBA
Important update: From the July-August 2025 session, UGC stopped universities from offering healthcare-linked subjects in online and distance mode. This includes Psychology, along with Microbiology, Food and Nutrition Science, Biotechnology, and Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics. If you want to study Psychology, you now need a regular (on-campus) program. Other BA subjects are not affected.
Online BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications)
Online BCA is a computer and software degree for students who want to work in IT.
- Best for: Students who enjoy coding, apps, websites and data
- What you study: Programming (C, Java, Python), databases, web development, computer networks, operating systems, software engineering
- Common specialisations: Data Science, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence
- Leads to: Junior developer, tester, IT support and web roles, then MCA for higher-level jobs
Because BCA is practical, choose a university that gives real coding labs, projects and internships, not just recorded videos.
Online UG courses at a glance
| Program | Duration | Best for | Next step |
| Online BBA | 3 years | Business and management careers | MBA |
| Online B.Com | 3 years | Accounts, banking, tax, CA/CS aspirants | M.Com, MBA, CA |
| Online BA | 3 years | Government exams, teaching, humanities | MA, B.Ed., MBA |
| Online BCA | 3 years | IT and software careers | MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science |
Courses you cannot do online
UGC does not allow courses that need hands-on training to be offered online. That includes engineering (B.Tech), medicine (MBBS), dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, architecture, physiotherapy and, since 2025, psychology and other allied healthcare subjects. Any website offering an “online MBBS” or “online B.Tech” from an Indian university should be treated as a warning sign.
Is an Online UG Course as Good as a Regular UG Course?
Both lead to the same bachelor’s degree. The difference is how you learn and what you get beyond the classroom.
| Online UG degree | Regular UG degree | |
| Validity | Equivalent to regular if the university is UGC-DEB approved | Valid if the university is UGC-recognised |
| Classes | Live and recorded online sessions | Daily classes on campus |
| Flexibility | Study any time, from anywhere | Fixed timetable |
| Fees | Usually lower | Usually higher, plus hostel and travel |
| Campus life | Limited; online clubs and events | Full: friends, fests, sports, societies |
| Practical work | Limited; no lab-heavy courses allowed | Labs, workshops, field work |
| Placements | Varies; some universities offer online placement support | Campus placements at many colleges |
| Best for | Working students, exam aspirants, students who need to stay home | Freshers who want the full college experience |
Simple rule: If you can attend college full-time and want campus life, choose regular. If you are working, preparing for an exam or cannot move cities, an approved online UG degree is a smart choice.
What Is the Eligibility for UG Courses and Do You Need CUET?
Basic eligibility: You must pass 12th standard, (10+2) from a recognised board. Many colleges also set a minimum percentage, often around 45-50%, with relaxation for reserved categories. Some courses need specific subjects, like Maths for B.Tech or Biology for MBBS.

There are two main ways to get admission:
1. Through an entrance exam (CUET and others) The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency, is used for UG admission at all central universities and many state, deemed and private universities. In 2026, CUET UG offered 37 subjects: 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and a General Aptitude Test. Check dates and the list of participating universities on the official CUET UG website.
Professional courses have their own exams: JEE Main for engineering, NEET UG for MBBS and BDS, and separate exams for law, design and hotel management.
2. Direct admission (merit-based) Many private universities, state colleges and almost all online UG programs admit students based on 12th standard marks, sometimes with an interview. No entrance exam is needed.
| CUET / entrance exam | Direct admission | |
| Used by | Central universities, many state and private universities | Many private colleges, most online programs |
| Based on | Exam score | Class 12th marks |
| Preparation | Several months | None |
What Are the Fees and Duration of UG Courses?
Fees depend on the course, the type of college and the mode of study. The ranges below are rough, indicative figures for the full course; always check the latest fee page on the university’s own website.
| Course type | Duration | Government college (approx.) | Private college (approx.) |
| B.A., B.Com., B.Sc. | 3-4 years | Low, often a few thousand to ₹50,000 | ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh |

| Online BA, B.Com., BBA, BCA | 3 years | Lowest overall | Often ₹50,000 to ₹2.5 lakh |
Remember to add hostel, travel, books and exam fees for regular courses. Government scholarships are listed on the National Scholarship Portal.
How to Choose the Right Course After 12th?
There is no single “best” course after 12th. The right one is the course that fits you. Follow these five steps:
- Start with what you enjoy. Which subjects did you like in Class 11th and 12th? If you liked accounts, look at B.Com. If you liked computers, look at BCA or B.Sc. Computer Science. Interest keeps you going for three or four years.
- Think about the job you want. Work backwards. Want to be a doctor? You need MBBS through NEET. Want to be a lawyer? Choose a five-year LLB. Want a government job? A BA or B.Com with good exam preparation works well.
- Check your eligibility. Make sure your stream, subjects and marks meet the course rules, and note which entrance exams you need.
- Choose your mode: online or regular. If you need to work or prepare for an exam, an approved online UG course may suit you better.
- Check the college, not just the course. Confirm the university is recognised by UGC, look at its faculty, placements and NAAC grade, and make sure it is not on UGC’s fake universities list.

An example: Priya enjoyed maths in 12th standard Commerce but did not want to become an accountant. After speaking to a career counsellor, she realised she liked working with data. She chose B.Sc. Statistics at a college that accepted Commerce students with Maths. Three years later, she moved into a data analyst role. The course matched both her interest and the job she wanted.
If you are still unsure, talk to a teacher, a career counsellor or seniors already studying the course.
What Can You Do After a UG Course?
A UG degree opens two paths: start working, or study further.
Start working. Graduates can join private companies, banks, IT firms, media houses and startups as trainees and executives. A bachelor’s degree is also the minimum qualification for most government exams, including UPSC Civil Services, SSC CGL and bank PO exams.
Study further (UG → PG). A postgraduate degree helps you specialise and grow faster.
| After this UG degree | Popular PG options |
| B.Com. | M.Com., MBA, CA/CS/CMA |
| BBA | MBA, PGDM |
| BCA | MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science |
| B.A. | M.A., MBA, B.Ed., LLB |
| B.Sc. | M.Sc., MBA, MCA |
| B.Tech | M.Tech, MBA |
Under UGC’s 2025 rules, students who complete a four-year UG degree with Honours can usually finish a master’s in just one year.
